This week I had a chance to read a few great books. All of which are available now and/or can be ordered in the store!
Avengers 1,000,000 BC.
Published by Marvel
Written by Jason Aaron
Penciled by Kev Walker
Rated T for Teen.
Available in stores now!
The story in short goes back to earliest days of The Avengers and weaves us a new origin story or rather birth story of the God of Thunder, Thor! Speculation anyone??!!
Aaron is a gifted storyteller and I didn’t expect anything less here. The tale begins with our team of early prehistoric Avengers including Star Brand, Iron Fist, Agamotto, Black Panther, Odin, Phoenix and Ghost Rider locked in battle and culminates in the death of one our hero’s. This was shocking from the start! The unemotional and egotistical Odin is less than remorseful and this drive’s a major rift between him and Phoenix as well as the rest of the team. After being drawn together some time later to help protect the birth of Odin’s son, things take an interesting turn and what occurs at the climax of the story will both surprise and leave you curious for more! Aaron is able to tell this story with some humor, certainly plenty of drama and an interesting twist that plays out very much like a page torn from the Bible. There is a lot of religious symbolism in this story as it unfolds and it only adds to the mystique and Godly qualities of our soon to be born Thor Odinson.
I highly recommend checking this out! It’s colorful and bright and the story is something that could have long term effects on the Marvel Universe. It’s also potentially spec worthy given a new baby Thor origin story!
The second new book I read this week which is catching a lot of spec around the internet is the $1.00 Frank Miller Presents ash-can. At only around 12,000 copies this book is flying off shelfs and already reselling on EBAY, etc.

In short this is the beginning of two new stories/book by Miller. They will be launched out of Millers own new Indie imprint FMP or Frank Miller Presents going forward.
If you like Frank Miller you will love these classically told Miller stories. They are gritty, quirky and weird in all the best ways. I love the art, style overall tone of both stories and can’t wait for more. Miller isn’t for everyone and his books are usually steeped in social commentary but if you enjoyed the first Ronin book or anything else of Miller’s, it can’t hurt to give this a shot! You can still find some 1st prints of this at the store and it’s believed there will be a second printing of this ash can in late September. Reach out and let us know if we can reserve a copy for you or stop in the store today!
Lastly I had a chance to check out the first trade of Frontiersman by Image Comics.
Frontiersman Vol. 1

This comic is about an old-fashioned and long retired super-hero/outdoorsman who is called to action years later, in the present day social climate to help a bunch of environmentalists prevent deforestation and stop a large company from cutting down a forest. As you can imagine he’s not quite up with times and between the drones, cell phones and social media alone he’s already wishing he stayed in his little remote cabin in the woods.
I was very surprised by this book. It was an absolute blast to read. It’s funny, emotional, other-worldly and a unique but accurate portrayal of the world we live in today. There are some adult moments that will leave this comic out reach on the shelf for our younger readers but anyone who is looking for something bold, fresh and new, this might be for you! There is a surprisingly amount of action and it’s a very easy read. I breezed through the first 5 issues, as part of the first trade, in no time at all. Definitely recommend giving this book a read. I found myself laughing out loud more than a couple times and if you are into Indie titles this is a great title to add to your pull list! You can pick up Vol 1. in the store today!
GEM OF THE WEEK
Since we just reviewed Frontiersman…..
Kindlon and Ferrari have a new book launching soon called ANTIOCH which appears to be set in the same world with Frontiersman. I will definitely be picking up a copy of this ASAP and I’ll let you know what I think!
