Get To Know The NATIVE. MADE. Market Native Creatives and Indigenous Allies

POP ROC Hosts The Inaugural

NATIVE. MADE. Market

Join the community on Small Business Saturday to shop local, and shop small, by shopping NATIVE. MADE. On Saturday November 26, 2022, POP ROC is hosting the NATIVE. MADE. Market at 45 Euclid Street, Rochester, NY 14604 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This gathering brings Native creatives, businesses, educators and other community change agents together in an effort to immerse people into Native culture in an engaging, meaningful and impactful way.

"This event is more than a market! It is an opportunity for communities to honor and learn about Native culture through intimate conversations. Rather than absorbing colonized history through the looking glass of museums and institutional textbooks; we are working to build foundational relationships. The NATIVE. MADE. event brings a diverse group of Indigenous peoples and Allies together to share that we are HERE. We are active members in our communities; and we are choosing to be part of a new fabric being woven for generations to come." Angelina Hilton, Event Curator, POP ROC Co-founder, Member of Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska and of Iowa descent.

Join us on Thanksgiving weekend to honor Native culture of the past, present and future. The event is free and open to the public. POP ROC provides safe space for communities to build relationships with one another. The NATIVE. MADE. Market has been created for this purpose. This event provides an opportunity to engage with Indigenous enrolled members and descendants of over 10 different tribes and their Allies. Guests can also support by shopping Native accessories, apparel, paintings, sculptures, bead art, and MORE!

Name: Isaac Dalimonte

Tribe: Tuscarora Tribe, Beaver Clan

Craft: Oil Pastel Pieces, Canvas Art, Jewelry, Resin Work & Prints

Bio: My name is Isaac Dalimonte. I am of Black, Haudenosaunee, and Sicilian descent. I am a part of the Haudenosaunee Tribe, part of the Tuscarora Nation and a member of the Beaver Clan. I have always loved art since I was in elementary school. Art was always one of my favorite subjects and I would always be drawing/or coloring. Just recently I have been able to express myself more and enjoy more of my passion in being artistic. It had all started in the beginning of 2020 when the pandemic hit. I wanted to do something to keep myself busy as we were all stuck inside and it awakened my love for crafting, drawing and painting. I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to teach myself more and more about different styles and techniques to better my work.

A lot of my love for art has come from my family and family history. My great grandfather was Stan Hill and he was famous for being the first bone carver in modern day times. My mother and grandmother are also a huge inspiration for me. My mother has done art work most of her life and has perfected her craft. I had gotten my enjoyment in painting from her. My grandmother has also been doing craft work for as long as I can remember. She has done a ton of jewelry work and has made 1000s of dreamcatchers. I feel I get my love for hands-on crafting from her. I am grateful for the many opportunities I have had to show my work to the public and I'm excited for what lies ahead.

As well as in museums and galleries in Canada and the USA. In 2020, I was commissioned by the Canadian government to create a piece for the Canadian Ambassador to Austria to give to the outgoing head of the International Atomic Energy Commission in Geneva. I had to create two pieces, one for the gift and one for permanent display in Ottawa. I like to work in soapstone, moose and deer antlers, and buffalo bones.

Name: Faye Lone

Tribe: Tonawanda Seneca, Hawk Clan

Organization Name: Longhaus Of Lone

Craft: Handmade clothing - traditional and everyday fashion, quilted home goods, t-shirts/hoodies with our original designs, handmade fleece outerwear

Bio: Faye has been making original distinctive woven ribbon work for over 40 years.  She taught three of her daughters and two of her daughters, Shquanebin and Naquaqua, now work with her embellishing custom coats, dress shirts and dresses with their expert ribbon work and applique. We make over 50 products, both clothing and home goods for the whole family.  So we created a single company, Longhaus Of Lone, to take our fashion designs to the world.  We are thankful for this creative outlet and hope everyone enjoys are works and much as we enjoy making them.

Authenticity and knowledge are key elements of my work.  I use my imagery to tell stories, to make a statement, not always subtle.  My fabric art is an opportunity to teach about our culture, to show true depictions.  I am known for weaving ribbons, vibrant colors and elaborate stitching in my pieces.  Having my works in museums is such a thrill: my works are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, The Eitlejorg, the New York State Museum, the Seneca Nation of Indians Museum and the Pequot Museum.  MoMA took one of my works for over two years for an exhibit.

Name: Richard Hamell

Organization Name: Wampum Bear

Bio:Through considerable research and the vital assistance from authorities, I have completed over 120 different reproduction wampum belts, probably the largest collection of its kind. This collection is available for the use by the Native American communities in their programs across the United States and abroad. To share this knowledge I created the website, http:// wampumbear.com/. Photographs of my wampum belts have appeared in several publications: Iroquois: People of the Longhouse; Journal of Ethnohistory; Strong Stories – Two-Row Wampum; and other educational material. Yearly, I exhibited the belts at Haudenosaunee and Wyandotte events, Epcot Center in Orlando, historic sites, museums, cultural centers and schools, and for community programs.

Along with the display of belts and their history, I perform demonstrations of the methods used to create shell beads and the wampum belt loom. Special events to which I have been invited include: Fort Niagara Reenactments, Canandaigua Treaty Day, the 2015 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship (hosted by the Onondaga Nation Territory south of Syracuse), the National Battlefield at Fort Necessity (PA), River Raisin in Michigan. and numerous Native American Pow Wows. When I am not at the loom creating a new belt, I serve as a docent at the Seneca Art and Cultural Center at Ganondagan and as a member of the board. Also, I am an active participant in Ganondagan’s White Corn Project. In recognition of my contributions to the Native American Communities and outreach programs I was honored by being adopted by the Seneca and given the name: Haswe:donih – he makes wampum.

Loretta Boerman

Name: Loretta Boerman

Organization Name: Loretta Boerman’s Jewelry

Craft: Native American Jewelry

Bio: I have been making jewelry and crafts for my lifetime.  My Grandmother and Mother were crafters.  They usually made afghans, but my niece got me into making kumihimo jewelry and then I have tried many types of jewelry. Making loom beaded Native American bracelets is what I really love to do.  I could spend days just bead looming if I had the time. I still work and bead when I have the time.

I grew up in Pennsylvania in a very small town, Putneyville.  I sewed clothes for my dolls at a young age, with my Mother's help.  On my Father's side, I am not sure how far back, there were Native Americans.  I want to eventually do some genealogy to find out what tribe it was.  It would make me very proud to know what tribe is my ancestor.

I have 2 sisters and am a middle child.  My Mother lived to be 99 years old.  I am married to a wonderful man, Bruce Boerman.  He and I have raised our one grandson, Tyler, since he was 9 years old.  He is now 23 and has a job and is a wonderful young man.

Gakwi:yo:h Farms

Name: Gerry Fisher

Tribe: Seneca Nation

Organization Name: Gakwi:yo:h Farms

Craft: Bison Meat

Bio: Gakwi:yo:h Farms addresses food security and food sovereignty through community engagement and wellness by implementing a Haudenosaunee approach to agricultural practices. Our goal is to produce healthy food, employ quality food processing procedures and make these foods available to our community members, from field to table. The foundation of our mission rests on the ability to positively impact our people, to contribute to a conscious shift toward healthier eating habits and to change the way we bring food into our homes.

As an agriculture initiative, our goal is to reconnect to the philosophy of our ancestors and pledge to promote the relationship between our people, our lands and the foods we eat. Just as our people have always understood and respected the value of our traditional foods, we acknowledge the value placed on healthy food - especially our white corn, which is an inherent part of our culture. By honoring the value of each corn stalk, each ear of white corn and each individual kernel, we increase our understanding and appreciation for who we are, as a people. At the same time, Seneca Nation Agriculture Department will be open to state of the art practices, equipment and industry standards to achieve the highest productivity possible to make the greatest impact on the health and well-being of our members.
