COREY’S COMIC CORNER!
I’m just sitting down to write this blog and had to decide between Monday Night Football and The Emmys for a little background noise. I settled on The Emmys which I think really says a lot about me. haha. Yea, sometimes I surprise even myself. Wait until Oscar season!
This week I had the chance to read a bunch of new books, including a preview of the new Image comic Vanish by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman which comes out on September 21st! More on that later. Below are some thoughts that stuck out to me on a few of these books.

This book basically is about a new and entirely different group of Fantastic Four members including the Hulk (Joe Fixit), Spider-Man, Ghost Rider and Wolverine. The team takes unusual and different missions that are a little out of the ordinary. Such as hunting down a demon controlling the minds of the homeless, which is the case in this first issue. It’s a team of large personalities that you wouldn’t think would work but this gives the book enough bite, humor and edge to keep things interesting.
I was pleasantly surprised by this first issue. It’s rather dark for a Fantastic Four book and it almost feels like something entirely different but also refreshing in a good way. This is not your daddy’s Fantastic Four and that’s ok. It’s witty, has a sense of humor and doesn’t appear to take itself too seriously with this initial story. I can’t wait to see how these heroes will work together in the next issue. It’s bound to get a little tense. There’s also a sense that familiar Fantastic Four members will appear so that will make things interesting as well. Nonetheless, how can you not be curious? Talk about Superheroes with attitude??!! Wow! Check it out! You will not be disappointed. Unless of course you are looking for Reed Richards or Sue Storm. Then. Maybe? Only one way to find out.

This book is part of a series of One-shots that appear to weave together a different team-up with Moon Girl over three issues to find her best pal, Devil
Dinosaur! Things are not as they seem as Devil Dinosaur has turned up missing and a confrontation between Moon Girl and her pet dino lead her to believe it’s not the same Devil Dinosaur she befriended many moons ago. With the help of Miles Morales, The X-men and The Avengers she’s out to figure out what’s going on and get Devil Dinosaur back. Even if it means skipping school, lying to her parents and mixing it up with whomever else gets in the way.
I actually thought this book could have been much better. It felt a bit rushed and repetitive at times and I was really expecting it to be a lot more humorous. The colors and art were a highlight. I only wish the story was the same caliber, especially given everything I have read prior with these characters. With a Moon Girl animated show coming soon on Disney Plus and Miles being the main character in the next Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse sequel. I expect big things from these characters even if this book was a little underwhelming. I hope the next issue balances everything out but overall felt like this was a missed opportunity.

Wow! Issue #1000! What started in Amazing Fantasy issue #15 in 1962 all leads here! Spider-Man’s 60th birthday celebration as told through the eyes of today's best writers and artists.
This book was great! Plain and simple. 8 different short stories each representing a different style, evoking a different emotion and drawing on all of the history of one of the greatest and friendliest hero’s of all time. The trademark humor is there. The guilt and pain of loss that has etched away at Peter Parker over the years is on display and you can tell that even though this book is about a 60th birthday celebration it’s really more about everything that has happened over those 60 years and how it’s shaped Peter Parker and Spider-Man. I found two of the stories personally resonated with me. Neil Gaiman's “With Great Power” and Don Slott’s “His Sinister 60th”. Both of these stories were fairly emotional and really help to show what makes Spider-Man so special. His biggest attribute wasn’t his super strength, super reflexes or spider sense. His true gift was really people and caring for the people he loved. No matter the cost. I think, making him the most human super-hero and one anyone can truly admire. One of the reasons i’ve been such a big fan since I was little. Great read! Great stories. Check it out!

This book is a one shot building on the Power Ranger universe with an origin story about one of the Omega Rangers who turned to the dark side and who is then able to basically raise an army of the dead among other nefarious and dark devices.
Having never read a lot of Power Ranger books I picked up this title because it just sounded really cool and it offered a darker and deeper dive into the whole Power Ranger history and mythology. It didn’t let me down! This is the kind of villain the Power Rangers has always needed and it honestly gave me a new appreciation for the series in general. The story is cool. The colors are vibrant and the writing is easy enough to pick up as a new reader but with enough meat to satisfy long time readers as well! If you are into Power Rangers this book is a must have and I happen to know there are a couple nice virgin variant covers in the store waiting to be snatched. Definitely worth a read and if you are a mega fan stop in and check out some of the variant covers! Do it!

Coming Sept 21st
I had a chance to preview this book and all I can say is wow! Magic, Mayhem, brutality, foul language and everything you could want from a 90’s comic but in 2922! This comic is looking to be huge and the first issue was nothing short of spectacular. The colors and inks are spot on. It’s dark, bold and even haunting. Cates writing is the perfect addition to Stegman’s style. This book has the potential to be huge. Check it out and pre-order it in the store today! I personally can’t wait to preview the next issue.
That’s it for this week folks! Stay tuned for our next blog and make sure you reach out if you are interested in any of these books or have any comments!
Better yet, stop in, grab a bite, some coffee and see what else is new. There’s something for everyone!
See ya soon!
