Review of "DC SUPER PETS: COMET The Origin Of Supergirl’s Horse", MARVEL-VERSE: MOON GIRL & DEVIL DINOSAUR, RAIN, and the show PEACEMAKER
/I was forced to read comics again!!
DC SUPER PETS: COMET The Origin Of Supergirl’s Horse
This week our 7 year old 2nd grader, Elijah, read “DC SUPER PETS: COMET The Origin Of Supergirl’s Horse” by Steve Korté. This is illustrated by one of my favorites, the “famous cartoonist”, Art Baltazar. ($4.95)
The story was great and I learned a thing or two myself. It was easy enough for him to read and keep him engaged. He read it cover to cover and really enjoyed the jokes in the back as well. There is great info about other superheroes & villains with their pets, a nice little glossary of cool words and even some other Super Pet books for him to look forward to.
I personally always love the art of the “famous cartoonist” Art Baltazar. I’m also a HUGE Super Pets fan and can’t wait for the movie to come out May 20th . This is a great way for me to introduce these characters to my kids before the movie. You can read the synopsis here or watch the trailer below.
All things considered this is a 10 out of 10 for me.
MARVEL-VERSE: MOON GIRL & DEVIL DINOSAUR
By Brandon Montclare (Author), Gustavo Duarte (Artist), Ray-Anthony Height (Artist), Alitha Martinez (Artist) ($9.99)
Next, I read MARVEL-VERSE: MOON GIRL & DEVIL DINOSAUR. This graphic novel covers issues 1 and then jumps into 3 great stories from issues, 42, 43, 46 & 47. The stories are pretty rad. All team ups with characters like Spider-Man, Thor & Fantastic Four and their respected “worlds”.
These stories are unique for a couple of reasons. First, there is always some weird bickering that happens between Moon Girl and the team up character. Mostly about how smart she is. It’s something you don’t see when these characters are solo. Going back and forth with a kid in a homemade superhero costume who’s ready to whoop your butt in a drop of a dime makes for some good reading for some reason. Also, because she’s “the smartest person in the world’, she creates some dope accessories to help her do the things she does. I'm not sure what she does. But when she does it, it’s pretty cool.
Honestly, I couldn't read this all in one sitting because people actually need me to do things for them. I’m not sure why but they do. The point is, I couldn’t wait to read the whole thing. I was seriously carrying it around with me sneaking in pages wherever I could.
Great read and bonus if you’re looking for a comic that is more about brains than brawn, a female and/or black lead character.
RAIN
An IMAGE COMICS ashcan called RAIN. A story by Joe Hill, adaptation by David M. Booher and art by Zoe Thorogood. (3.99)
“Rain first appeared in author Joe Hill’s acclaimed novella collection Strange Weather, and tells the story of a seemingly normal August day in Boulder, Colorado—the skies are clear and Honeysuckle Speck couldn’t be happier. She’s finally moving in with her girlfriend, Yolanda. But their world is literally torn apart when dark clouds roll in and release a downpour of nails—splinters of bright crystal that shred the skin of anyone not safely under cover.” Said Chris Ryall.
Chris Ryall and Ashley Wood are teaming up for a new publishing venture with Image Comics. Syzygy Publishing will be launching with a comic book adaption of Joe Hill’s Rain, a five issue mini-series from writer David M. Booher (Killer Queens), artist Zoe Thorogood (The Impending Blindness of Billie Scott), colorist Chris O’Halloran (Ha Ha), and letterer Shawn Lee (Madman Artist’s Select).
I don’t want to ruin too much for you. The story is good. The idea of nails falling from the clouds is scary. The art and story are brutal. Not for kids.
However, a great over 18 read for sure and I can’t wait to see where this goes. We’ll be ordering this for the store for sure. Another bonus if you’re looking for more inclusivity with characters. Especially LGBTQIA+
PEACEMAKER
I also want to talk about PEACEMAKER, the show on HBO MAX starring WWE superstar John Cena.
I’ll keep it short. It’s the best episodic show on at the moment. It’s a little raunchy but it’s also the part Cena was born to play. Total homerun all around. Not for kids. No, no, no, not for the littles.
Alright Pop Rockers, that’s all I got this week. I tried to sneak in some more but people in my life are so demanding and want me to sit and eat dinner with them and stuff.
Till next time.
